Habitus 2.0

 The diminishing man/machine divide

Man/machine integration is a reality and will grow exponentially in the future. It’s being researched on and experimented by technologists, engineers, bio-mechanists and futurists all over the world as we speak and holds unlimited possibilities and scope.

Habitus 2.0 is a work in progress and aims at exploring the subsequently mentioned scenarios and speculate on the possibilities of such a future. This is envisaged as a research-based speculation, possibly a graphic simulation showcasing multiple narratives or even an attempt in experimental theater.

Habitus is a system of embodied dispositions, tendencies that organize the ways in which individuals perceive the social world around them and react to it. These dispositions are usually shared by people with similar background, as the habitus is acquired through mimesis and reflects the lived reality to which individuals are socialized, their individual experience and objective opportunities. Thus, the habitus represents the way group culture and personal history shape the body and the mind, and as a result, shape social action in the present.

Habitus is created through a social, rather than individual process leading to patterns that are enduring and transferrable from one context to another, but that also shift in relation to specific contexts and over time. Habitus ‘is not fixed or permanent, and can be changed under unexpected situations or over a long historical period’.

Human settlements, societies, culture, customs, languages etc. have all evolved through time and have been influenced by multiple factors while technological advancements have been the most influential factors whether it be farming, architecture, transport or the industrial revolution.

With the advent of the space age and IOT, the world has come even closer to physical boundaries being completely redundant in some cases. But what next ?

Now the technology has moved beyond imagination, the integration of human body with micro-chips and robotics is not science fiction anymore. It’s a reality which cannot be ignored and will only become more pronounced. The future will be the age where there is no gap between human and machines, man will become an integral part of the grid.

Which naturally begs the question: What will the future be like?

With this technological advancement also there will be significant change in the habitus. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strategies_for_Engineered_Negligible_Senescence

Are people of tomorrow the building blocks of the cities of tomorrow?

Cities are direct derivatives of emerging technologies, social structure, economics and political scenarios.

Cities started expanding phenomenally with the advent of technology when connectivity increased, this phase also resulted in an increase in employment opportunities which resulted in large-scale urban migration.

JUXTAPOSED WITH :

the invasion of technology in the human body………..

beginning from the pace maker to prosthetics and embedded chips, to future possibilities like plugin learning and enhanced brain function & big brain becoming a possibility.

All of this being integrated through wearables and omnipresent connectivity implies that humans would be an integral part of the built infrastructure……….a part of the grid.

Given the fusion of technology and the human body a new dimension of interaction will emerge. Communication will be instantaneous and real-time: will this lead to a decline in traditional languages? How would conversations take place? What would they be like?

Found connections & lost identities

In every era , when connectivity has increased there has been mixing of cultures and societies. In the last few decades the gap between cultures, societies, countries has been reduced due to the emergence of one global economy and citizenship. These characters along with nationalities, religions and beliefs are the very essence of what personal identities and allegiances are based on, as a result of emergence of trans-human these identities would no longer exist.

What happens when medicine and bio-engineering is combined with micro-chips?

Medicine has been gradually evolving as an engineering field.

Doctors would no longer be required, engineers and programmers come together to combat health issues, which can also be done remotely.

Life expectancy would increase drastically and population would become stagnant,  the need to reproduce will no longer be logical.

Death of cities, and the rise of brave new worlds

Since machines would be doing the bulk of work and the absence of the need to commute to work would lead to people preferring life on farms, in the hills, sea side etc….leading to smaller community settlements and preference of isolated living…..groceries and food would be delivered by drones and self driven vehicles.

This will lead to disintegration of cities as we know it and would result in community and smaller settlements or isolated living.

Autumn and spring in the same day

The concept of urban settlement will be challenged and emergence of intelligent and greener communal architecture will result in efficient management of resources and improvement of the environment and tree cover itself.

Architecture and landscapes would be more responsive and fluid as per the environment and individual user’s requirements. A simple thought about a particular look and feel would be able to completely transform the architectural and outdoor space.

Flowers would start blooming whenever we want…..trees form shapes that we desire.

ARCHITECTURAL PERCEPTION & MOBILITY

" Moving elements in a city, and in particular the people and their activities, are as important as the stationary physical parts. We are not simply observers of this spectacle but ourselves are a part of it. Most often our perception of the landscape, city – architecture as a whole is not sustained, but rather partial, fragmentary, mixed with concerns."
