NATURE'S SKYSCRAPERS - GREENING BURJ KHALIFA
Can the current state of global architecture – glazed multi storied abstractions that proliferate around the world be made responsive to the needs of climate change and future sustenance? Is the ideal of design in consonance with the ideal of a more equitable resource in the world? For exercise we have selected the Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest structure for two reasons:
1. Its iconic status fuels visibility and makes people aware of design directions of architecture.
2. As an important symbol in emerging world, it sits in an extreme climatic situation, clad in a glass curtain wall, and begs an alternative.
Finally the attempt is a test case for developing a future form of urban living. A skyscraper for the poor, the dispossessed and marginalized. With rapid urbanization of cities, the skyscraper’s transformation into the city home for the newly arrived is a case worthy of exploration.
The conceptual design was developed for D3 Natural Systems Competition as a team, with Gautam Bhatia Navin Gupta Architect, New Delhi - 2015.
